    Happy anniversary

Alex and I took the weekend off. Piper had a big sleepover with "Bompa" (her collective name for Alex's parents), and we slept in, had breakfast in bed, read the newspaper, window-shopped, bought fancy chocolate truffles and watched three movies in one day. It was a wonderful start to Year Seven.

It's so easy to lose sight of each other in the day-to-day. This weekend helped me remember that Alex isn't just Piper's Daddy or my partner in housekeeping or the guy who pays the bills. He's my best friend.

    A wonderful weekend

When we lived in Columbia, I always said that we wanted to move closer to our families. We were there for five years, and then Alex finished his program and (after a bit of chaos) we did move closer to our families. What I didn't realize was how difficult it would be to leave our new family behind.

Alex sent me to Columbia for the weekend, and it really felt like I'd never left. I stayed with Amy, and we just slipped into our comfy old friendship without a hitch.

It was so wonderful to see everyone and to get so many good and much-needed hugs. I can't thank Alex or my friends enough. I love you guys!

    Best Husband Ever.

Alex gives wonderful gifts. As much as I love being the recipient of his thoughtfulness, I always feel bad on gifting occasions because he showers me with presents he's spent months picking out and I inevitably end up giving him a pair of jeans and a DVD or a pack of new socks and a CD.

    I love this guy.

So what does he do? He tops it. (Not that I'm complaining.)

It was a very, very long day of gifting around these parts. There are four little bits here for the holidays, so we took frequent breaks for snacks, naps and meals. We finally reached the end of the pile about 30 minutes ago.

I thought I was done. And here comes Alex, with a plain white envelope. I opened it and pulled out a plain white sheet of paper, with one sentence written on it: "Say 'Hello' to Amy for me."

And I didn't get it. I said so. And Alex said, "You fly to Kansas City on ..." and that was all I heard because I was too busy trying not to cry to listen to the specifics.

I've been lonely since we moved to Ruraltown, USA. I don't make friends easily, and it makes it that much harder to meet people when you live 20 minutes away from everything. I miss my friends. I can't wait to see them.

I love my husband so much.

    Thanks, Alex.

    Home again, home again (jiggity-jig)

We had a great time at my dad's. Piper and "Papa" really bonded this time, I think.

    But.

It's so good to be home. To my own bed and my own shower and my Alex.

Yesterday was a very long day. We left Detroit about half an hour late. It was a very quick jaunt to Chicago, but the flight still worried me. Piper was very wriggly, and the Chicago-Raleigh flight was going to be almost two hours.

In Chicago, Piper was (amazingly) content to ride around the concourse in her stroller for the whole layover. I wanted to stop by the Ben & Jerry's store, but the line was pretty long and I didn't think Pi would stand for being still for that long. So we walked on by.

The flight from Chicago also left late, this time because we were waiting for people connecting from another flight. I know I would have been grateful if I'd been the one rushing for the flight, but as the one sitting on the plane with a restless toddler? Not so much. But a very nice lady sat next to us, on the other end of a three-seat row, and she played with Piper for nearly the whole flight. I'm marking her down as a blessing.

And then there was another blessing: Piper's face when she spotted her daddy. She looked a little confused at first; our little napless wonder was so tired. She saw him, and she said, "Daddy?" And then she said, "Daddy! Daddy!" And it was like I wasn't even there for the rest of the night. It was lovely.

So lovely, in fact, that it hardly phased me at all when I was standing and standing and standing at the baggage-claim carousel and watching the luggage go by and standing and standing until the conveyer belt stopped. There was still a crowd of us there, and we just stood there for a minute, waiting for it to start again. There were too many of us there. There had to be more bags.

However. There were not. They were all done.

The airline lost all of our bags.

  • my clothes
  • Piper's clothes
  • my camera download cord
  • my battery charger
  • a bunch of Piper's toys, including Pooh Bear
  • my reading journal
  • my purse (just the purse; I had all of my stuff in the diaper bag, with me)
  • my bathroom kit, which means my face feels like its going to fall off because I don't have my face cream

The baggage claim lady was optimistic that we'd get everything back today. But she would be, wouldn't she? And she was right! The delivery guy just called to confirm our address!

    . . . . . the end . . . . .
